So what would you recommend? I think I want to stay away from installing rear speakers due to cost, complexity and to maintain imaging of the fronts.
I currently have (but haven't installed): a set of 10yr old Boston Pro 6.5 component speakers, a 10" sub, and a PPI mono amp.
Options:
1. Keep the factory head unit, install my Bostons, my 10" sub and get a $200 three-channel amp with speaker-level inputs to power all speakers and a $100 sub enclosure for the trunk.
2. Keep the factory head unit, get new $150 component speakers and a $150 two channel amp. Forget the sub for now.
3. Get a new $200 head unit w/built-in Mosfet amp, sub output etc and a $100 sub enclosure. Install my Bostons, sub and PPI mono amp.
4. ???

Hey, I didn't read any of your post...but someone asked about this recently...
Ultra-low budget, you could get the Crystal CSs60 (sp?) components from XXXXXXXXXXX for about $150. And then for the sub a Pioneer IMPP sub for $40 from XXXXXX...and finish it off with a couple 100x2 US Acoustics amps to power them from XXXXXXXX for $89 each...
There's your $400 system right there
[Edit] Fine, I read it...still think you wouldn't do bad with the pair of amps (Unless you care about trunk space )...
Get a JVC KD-SX980 MP3 deck (That's the one that I bought ) for $159 from XXXXXXXXXXXXXX if you want...
And if you don't build your own box, you could get an inexpensive one from XXXXXX...

Get a used 2 channel amp (ebay is good for this) to power the Bostons for around $40
Get a new HU for around $200
Get a sub box for $60
All set.
Those PPI mono amps are good for subs, don't get a 3-way amp unless you hate the idea of installing 2 amps. You have more flexibility this way and can get a better 2 channel amp for the same $$
Just my $0.02
PS: I bought a 12" sub box for my JL 12W3 for $65 from a local stereo shop & an amp on ebay for $35 so it's possible.

I was actually going to recommend rear speakers until I actually READ your post. I recently sat in a car where the only real mod was rear speakers added to the factory 2002 deck/front speakers and the difference was worlds better.
Other than that, probably replacing the stock speakers and adding an amp/sub would be a good bet.

Ok, I just don't understand the rear speaker thing in an S2k. Maybe I'm missing something, but there is about 1" between the back of my seat and the rear panel (and I'm only 5'10"). So how am I supposed to hear any mids or highs if I had rear speakers installed? I just don't get it-- what am I missing here (or hear).
Also, instead of taking-up trunk space with a sub, has anyone installed subs behind the front seats vs. 2-way or 3-ways? Seems more practical... .plus, it would be two subs in the cabin (albeit probably only 6" or 8") vs. one bigger one in the trunk.

I'm not particularly qualified to explain the sonic dynamics of why it works, but the rear speakers help add dimension (and punch) to the music.
You can actually feel the music better as well as getting fill in the full range.
