Its a common problem. Most people with aftermarket headunits seem to report it. I dont have an explanation for you, other than the fact that you should stop listening to AM radio

I believe the issue is related to the powered antenna. You need to make sure you hook up the power antenna lead to your new HU.

In the harness, there is a lead for a powered antenna. Many people leave it disconnected because it is typically used like a remote turn on lead to get a powered antenna to go up (or come down when you turn the radio off.)

You need to hook that up to the factory harness so the internal amplifier on the antenna turns on.

It is one of those things that is missed all the time. I personally did not connect the lead. I had to buy another plug and wire it all over again.

Trust us, the S2000 have a powered antenna. I mean , come on, that thing is tiny and needs all the help it can get.

This is even listed in the FAQ stuck to the top of this forum. S2000-specific Audio/Electronics FAQ v.2.36, current edition (last updated: 5/23/06)

I just installed my new aftermarket head unit, and now the radio doesn't seem to work?
The S2000 uses an amplified antenna. Chances are, when you wired up your new HU, you didn't connect the power antenna lead (thinking that there is no power antenna in the S2000), and that is your mistake. The S2000's amplified antenna gets its power from the power antenna lead.
