Alternate locations for factory CD changer

Alternate locations for factory CD changer
I'm interested in adding the factory CD changer to my stereo system but I don't like where I'm supposed to mount it: right on the floor of the trunk, as if there wasn't already a shortage of space back there.
Has anyone considered or actually tried other mounting locations? What about the rack in the well that holds the spare tire tools?
Thanks in advance for any advice or input.

The coolest install I have seen was a guy that mounted his CD changer in the secret compartment! He said it was a PITA to make it fit, but it looks GREAT!.
I have also heard about mounting the CD changer under the drivers seat.
I am not sure if the actual OEM CD Changer will fit in either of those location though. However, I am sure you can check it out.
An alternate suggestion would be to get a new HU that plays MP3s. No extra space needed, and you can have HOURS of tunes on a single disk. Just an "outside-the-box" suggestion.

I mounted my Alpine MP3 under the driver's seat and can change mazines without sotping the car. I don't believe the stock changer could be much larger. I also have seen the changer mounted to the left of the spare above the gass tank accessible from the trunk, I am saveing this spot for a two way radio installation.

i believe andy kirk mounted his changer to the bottom of the passenger seat, and i seem to recall that PAS2KNut mounted his Alpine changer in the secret compartment...
do a couple of searches... you should find some good pics.
also, check the thread at the top of the electronics forum for installs, there are some good ones in there too.

Yep thats how I did it. The advantages are that there is no limitation to the seat movement, any dirt on the floor has less chance to get into the changer, and I can change mazignes on the fly, (oh sure, at 80 MPH, not likely). If you do install it under the seat get help you don't want to accidently scratch the car with the seat rails. Also the best advice I can give you about DIY installations is "don't let yourself get caught up in a time crunch" allow plenty of time, don't allow yourself to get rushed.

Resurecting an old post here, but...
I've been wanting to do this with my changer, but I can't quite tell how that is bolted on to the seat. How long is the bolt or screw being used & what's the risk of it poking thru the leather above?

screw though the leather?? unless you plan on using 6 inch screws you'll be fine
1/2 inch self taping screws to the bottom of the seat pan is fine (see the brass clip - that's how the leather cover is attached so even if you used a large screw - you won't hit the leather)
seat pan, foam, then a leather cover
