Thanks a ton for the info, guys!

The strangest part is that they don't list that in the manual.
btw -- rather than just let this go on my word alone, i went to Alpine's tech center at their site. i could not find a technical product guide for the 9827, but found one instead for the 7894 (my model HU).

since the behavior is the same and the 9827 is only a model year ahead of mine, i don't find that it is much of a stretch to think that this hasn't changed.

here: http://www.stylestandard.net/oswego/Doc/0/...DA-7894_ptg.pdf

look at the BASS ENGINE section, and the first line there states:
Subwoofer Level Adjustment Range .........................................-15dB to 0dB (1dB steps)
but your dial doesn't read -15 dB to 0 dB, it reads 0 to +15. therefore, i would present that the logical conclusion is that 0 = -15 dB and +15 = 0 dB. (signal output relative to the other pre-amp outputs on the head unit.)

I couln't get the line to work, but thanks again for the detailed information on this. Like you, I think the crossover capabilities of the head unit are lacking. Otherwise, I think it's a great piece.

After some testing and adjustment tonight, my new sub sounds very nice. I spent some time getting rid of the latch rattle on the trunk and now I'm almost happy. I plan to pick up some bass blockers for the fronts to help keep low freqs away.

My whole install was meant to be a budget project and at this point has cost just a hair over $100. $50 1030W from Crutchfield and $50 amp from Circuit City. The amp seems to be a true stinker (Verge VGA300M), so I'm returning it replacing it with a Profile CA800 that I picked up for $90 shipped from the Profile site. I know Profile aren't the greatest amps in the world, but I hear they're not too bad for the money. That will push my costs up to ~$140, which is still pretty low considering the upgrade. The box was free since I made it with spare MDF from my 144 liter Adire Audio Tempest home theater sub project.

Maybe I should have stuck that in my S2k!

I've got a pretty serious sub amp. And I had to turn the gains 3/4 to 7/8ths up to enable me to use the bass setting on the HU effectively. (i like to adjust the bass on the fly, quite a bit) I hated just leaving it at +15, i had no headroom, no adjustability, not enough bass most of the time and just enough some of the time. so now i float between 5 and 14 depending on the song, and i couldn't be happier.

I haven't messed with the internal crossover on my 9833, because at this point i don't really need to. the crossovers on the amps are set correctly, and the gains are as well. it suits my tastes anyway.

Hmm....weird that you say that phil....If I set my bass to 10 and sub to 0, my car hits hard. If I set the bass to 0, and sub to max, you wont hear a peep. Are we talking about the same things here???

I confoosed.

And yes, phil and I get along very well. Its Mane thats the problem.

Of the the top of my head, I don't recall a "bass" setting on the 9833. Under what menu is this found? (Don't have immediate access to my menu.)

damn that Mane... why does he always cause such conflict??

Dave, have you tried to set the bass to 0, sub level to +15, then reset the sub gains? if you've got your bass set to 10, it will be artificially increasing the bass level going to both the sub and door speakers. which can make it seem like your sub level is greater than it actually is...

here -- this may help. check out these pages (skim the first one a bit where you know what's going on), but pay attention to the 2nd page and the little graph/flash things at various points. note how when you adjust the one w/ a bass level and volume, how you can use the bass level to push the low volume up high while unaffecting the highs level.

i hope that helps... let me know...

the 9833 doesn't have a 'bass' and 'treble' setting. it has a far superior option -- the parametric EQ. (actually a 5 band parametric EQ)

check out this page for how a parametric EQ works (relative to a typical EQ. a bass and treble adjustment are essentially a 2 band EQ)
http://www.bcae1.com/equalizr.htm

does that help Cathan?

Short answer is yes, it confirmed what I knew. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't being stupid and missed something that just said "bass". Thanks.

Well, phil....my crossovers and the crossover on the amp are set to block low freq. I dont get bass coming out of my speakers since the amp wont let them play it. This is confusing, Ill try and figure this shpiel out this weekend.

heh... don't let it confuse you.

the reality is, there are many many controls, and they all subtly affect each other.

so, if you boost bass at the HU, then filter it at the amp (for fronts), it may not affect you, depending on where your crossover points are, what your crossover slopes are, and more.

it isn't straight forward by any means.
