Yes, you program the PAC unit by pressing a dash button and then pressing a remote control button until you've pressed all the dash buttons and all the remote buttons you plan to program. After that you shouldn't need the remote again. You might need it if either the PAC unit forgets or you want to reassign a button.
I left my PAC unit accessable when I programmed it in June, but I haven't touched either the PAC or the remote since then.
By the way, I really wanted to get a direct connect solution rather than the infrared-PAC unit, but having had the PAC unit for half a year, I'm completely satisfied.
Same is true for my 7876. I'm sure you'll love the 7873 the same.
