Aftermarket Radio
I want to get an aftermarket stereo and i might sound like a dumb @ss but someone told me before that if i changed from stock then the dash controls (volume, preset stations) above the engine start couldn't be wired up to work. I'm just wondering if this is true or not?

Yes they will work. You will need a DCI of somekind. Modifry makes one that is sold in the S2ki Marketplace. Just make sure to get the one specific to the brand radio you are getting installed. They cost around $100.

Wasn't there a way of retaining stock controls with an Alpine unit, without having to go with a DCI?
I could've sworn there was a way of doing this with a european Alpine harness?
Or did I just pull that out of my gadonkadonk.

Not that I know of.....there may be something out there, though. Most HU's come "dash control ready" which means that they can be wired for dash controls. I dont know of any HU's that come with it pre-wired into the harness, unless the unit came with the "steering wheel" controls included (some Pioneers do that....not sure about Alpine).

There is an Alpine device avail in Europe that will give you dash controls, but from what I've read and from my personal experience, the Modifry DCI and the custom wiring harness are the easiest route for install and work with added functionality you'll enjoy.

I recently installed the Alpine 9855 HU with the dash control interface (KCE-865B) in our MY04. The KCE-865B connects to the existing OEM wiring harness, but you do need to interconnect the 865B to the Alpine Head Unit. It is pretty straightforward, but not quite plug and play.
I have read from others who used earlier versions of the 865B that it was completely plug and play... so I am not sure if they changed it over the years or not.
