going from 17 to 22 watts will increase your output by roughly 1 dB (I'm not
kidding), so yes, if it's not loud enough now you're destined to buy an amp.

Are you putting it to the stock speakers? If so, OTH is absolutely correct. Either way, you'll want to upgrade your door speakers. Upgraded door speakers can be more efficient (more volume with less power) and handle more power (when you add an amplifier). Start with upgrading your door speakers, and if that's still not enough, add an amplifier. An amplifier to the stock speakers wouldn't help much as the stock speakers can't handle much more power than you're throwing at them now.

Speakers and an amp > just speakers...but if you're on a budget, go with speakers first.

Hmmmmm.......unless ure stock speakers are distorting and thats why you cant hear it, upgrading to nicer speakers wont necessarily make it louder.....as i understand it (and im no s2k ice expert) but stock speakers are much more efficient and thus louder on less wattage. w/o an external amp, it would be fairly useless to upgrade your speakers using just an aftermarket head unit (once again, no s2k speaker expert)

I highly recommend the Diamond Audio Hex S600(s is a silk dome tweeter, less harsh - a is an aluminum tweeter, a bit brighter sound on the highs). You can pick up a set for approx $250 on Ebay and they sound phenomenal for the price. Very strong midbass (haven't had a sub for about 3 months, and barely notice when on the highway) and clean, clear highs.

They're efficient enough that you'll notice the difference without an amp. To fully appreciate them, you should run a 100x2 amplifier to the set, but they'll sound just fine off the HU (ran that way before I got my amp installed, so I can attest to the improvement).

However, personnel recommendations aside, you should go to a quality shop and listen to what they have available and pick what sounds best to you.

this post is not meant to flame you or make fun of you. i just want to prevent the spread of un-truths.

the stock speakers are very INEFFICIENT. thus playing softer than a higher efficiency speaker at the same wattage.

Replacing the stock speakers WILL get you more volume, and better sound quality compared to the stockers.

to the OP, i recently replace my door speakers with polk db 651s powered by a 40w X2 pioneer amp, with 14g speaker wire. I am very happy with the sound, although the bass out put is a bit lacking. Ill be adding a 10" JL to fix that problem.

thanks

james
