Default 2 questions about rear speaker install

I want to install rear speakers in MY2001. I have been reading the posts that came up from a search and just want to confirm that a stock radio from 2001 has leads for rear speakers? There are 4 sets of wires, but only 2 are being used? Is that correct?

Also, are there measured drawings available of the holes to be cut? Or does anyone have the dimensions and measurements that they used? Most importantly, what is the maximum depth you can put in there for a top mounted 4" speaker?

Thank you.

Sean

The radio has the capability of rear speaker outputs, but no wires. You need to make a harness yourself or buy one from Lucid (highly recommend going with his).

I did this and used the Polk 4". They were a clean fit and sound good. I have the dimensions for the center of the hole at home. If you want, PM me and I'll send you the measurements. This is really a great mod. You can hear the stereo with the top down and 70 mph afterwards.

After some more research, the headunit definately has to go. So more on the speakers.... what is the maximum depth of that space? What are some of the larger speakers people have used. i see a lot of 4", what about 5 1/4" ?

5.25" will work, but you're even more limited in selection than the 4". It all as to do with magnet diameter. I've said all along you can put in pretty beefy speakers if you're willing to cut metal. The metal to cut through is about 11 gauge (2 sheets together). If you go larger than 4" its also a good idea to reinforce the plastic panel as well. The more surface area you cut away the weaker it gets.

Lucid - what is the depth we have to work with? What speakers have people put in successfully with out cutting metal?

I strongly suggest you buy Lucid's harness. I did the install without it just to see if I liked the sound. It is very difficult to solder the 4 wires directly to the back of the head unit. Mine did not hold. I have Lucid's "muting" harness and it is a godsend.
Also, the OEM speaker magnets is almost the maximum size you can put into the space without cutting metal. You may be able to go 1/4-1/2" bigger but that's pushing it. As for depth, this is not a problem unless you get a really weird speaker with extremely deep magnets. I'd say you could easily go another 1" further back than what the OEM speaker magnets go back.
Look at this thread where I responded to how to measure for cutting the hole:

I can thoroughly recommend this mod - I have put Polk EX 2540 4" components into the rear panels and they sound great (headunit has been upgraded as well) - I am also proud of the way they look, but not that many people are interested in looking back there!!

Anyhow, the point of all this is to say I really dont think you could put in speakers with magnets any larger that the polk 2540 mid range unit(3 1/8") without cutting metal.

Have fun

3 1/8" ?!! Wow thats more room than I thought. There's plenty of nice 4 or 5 1/4 that will fit in there.

I'm sure you'll get some more informed views than mine on this Bernie, but once you go to a larger speaker (5 1/2" say) I would guess that you may also start to have issues withthe frame behind the speaker.

Good choice ianl! (I have the same components back there...) Can I ask where/how you installed the tweeters? Do you have any pictures? I STILL have not permanently mounted my tweeters yet.
