Default Wheel Painting

Okay, so I want to paint the insets of my ap2v2 wheels black and leave the face metal. I've been doing research and about 90% of the people who paint their wheels don't strip the wheel, they just sand and prime. The other 10% use some form of aircraft or paint stripper and then paint.

I was wondering if it was necessary to strip or just to sand and paint.

If this is in the wrong section please move it

I guess you could strip the paint first, that would be the right way to do it. Im not sure what other people do but im sure the correct way is to use some paint stripper first.

There is no reason to strip the paint prior to painting. Just sand the area that you're painting with at least 320+ grit sandpaper so that the paint can adhere. Using anything more abrasive than 320 will show scratches through your base.

dont need to strip it. that method sucks. If you really want to get it down to the metal you get it sandblasted witha very soft media so the rims reatains its integrity. ( but thats more for powdercoating) for paint just wet sand the wheel with 320, then wet sand with 600, use a good primer and sealer . Lay down your 2 coats of base color and then apply 2-3 coats of clear. I have painted plenty of nice wheels for a nice premium.

scuff with a scotch brite pad, and then wipe down with a cleaner, spray a primer, and then paint.

I'm painting my wheels with rattle cans. Stupid cans keep spraying out large blobs of paint.

I'm shaking the can non-stop for 5 mins before spraying, wiping the nozzle clean every few sprays and am spraying upside down after every coat to clear the nozzle.

I'm also heating the can prior to spraying.

Nothing's working and I'm getting these blobs everywhere. The bigger ones are around 7 or 8mm across.

Makes all the prep work seem like such a waste.

Is there any way to fix this?

Don't use cheap rattle cans?

What kind of paint are you using? I would at least use some kind of wheel paint that will be more durable if you are using something else. When I had my ap1 wheels I painted them black with normal spray paint, and the chipped very quickly. Then I did them gunmetal with duplicolor wheel paint and it lasted a while, but then just started chipping after about 6 months. Then I used actual car paint and sprayed them Silverstone, and they lasted probably a year before they had chips, and they werent that bad at all. So I would at least use a specific wheel paint your you are going to be touching your wheels up every month or so.
