Powder Coating Question
Hey guys,
Looking at getting my Advan RS powder coated flat black or semi-gloss black possibly. Couple of questions.
They offer clear coating for 25% additional fee on top of what I'm paying ($400 for all wheels I believe). This includes de-greasing, sandblasting, a coat of corrosion resistant primer and then the top coat color of choice. Are clear coats suggested for powder coated wheels?
Just wanted to make sure I get everything done the first time as the paint on the wheels are chipping in the center unfortunately so I'd like to get it taken care of.
Thanks

Clear is mostly used for a glossy finish. 1 coat of clear powder is just like 1 coat of the base color. So it doesnt really matter to much, it honestly wont chip easier without it since the clear is just a powder just like the base color.

To clear coat or not to clear coat - it really depends. Some colors will lose luster if you add a clear coat; others absolutely require it. It also depends on the baking temperature of the powders. If you apply a black that bakes at 350, it might bubble/blister if you add a clear coat that bakes at 400. As others have commented, it won't really enhance the durability.
Then again, I'm just an amature so take my comments with a few grains of salt.

^ That does have some truth behind it. The Black Chrome powder i'v used on multiple parts bakes at a slightly lower temp than my clear, but it doesnt bake as long. Thats the key there. I'v never had powdercoat blister on me yet. Also if you get them professionally done, thats something you dont have to worry about since they know what their doing.

I had silver powder put on my wheels, with clear, I couldn't imagine them without the clear as I think it looks nicer with it rather than without it. I like a bit of gloss on wheels.

^ I agree. All my peices with clear look alot nicer. Also it looks better b/c the finish is really smooth and the powder has a 3D look to it..like it is under glass or something. Looks awesome.
