Default Closing/opening vert top - latches?

The first time I ever put the top down, I undid the latches, moved the hooks to the "down" position, then locked the latches back in place, then proceeded to lower the top. Heard a huge bang/pop as the top neared the closed position, and later on realized that it was the latches being forced open as the top collapsed. So in my head, I thought "of course, latches need to be open when retracting."

Went to put the top down today, undid the latches, and proceeded to lower. But after retracing very little, the hooks caught back onto their anchor points by themselves (both did). I returned the top to closed position, unhooked the hooks, and re-lowered. Same thing happened. It happened three times in a row, so now I'm figuring I must be missing something.

What am I doing wrong here?

The latches must be latched when you lower the top. You risk tearing a hole in the top if you do not latch them back.

They seem to be forced open during the closing process though. I did it once just to watch it happen, and indeed they back of the latches are pressed up against one of the top's bars when its near closing, basically prying them open to close. Is this an issue with my top's closing mechanism?

maybe you need some new straps. I had a similar problem with the latches until i replaced them with the modifry ones.

good luck

^^ THIS! Read up on the elastic strap issue. They get stretched and worn out with age/use. When that happens, the top doesn't fold properly due to one of the bars not getting pulled back by the stretched out strap. Then the latch gets stuck, bad things happen and your top can tear. Replace with the Modifry straps and all is better.

Easiest fix I've ever done.
