Default winter road conditions in Alberta?

I'm looking around for an old AWD subaru as my winter beater and it looks like I'm not going to be able to find one locally, so I've started looking in other provinces.

I see one at Gateway Toyota in Edmonton, but I was hoping some Alberta guys can give me some info here:

1. What are the winter conditions like in Alberta? Lots of salt used? Cars corrode fast?

2. Do used cars require a safety inspection before they can be registered in Alberta? I know that doesn't directly affect me as I'll have to get it safetied here in Manitoba anyway, but if the car passes the inspection in Alberta, there would be a good chance of it passing the safety without additional repairs here in MB.

Thanks in advance!

Hey Nish,

Very very little salt gets used in Alberta. Its cold and dry. Our cars last forever compared to what you'll see coming from anywhere east of your location.

No, we have no provincial inspections here. The only one is if you want to bring a vehicle INTO Alberta, otherwise, you can pretty much register any old piece of junk.

What's the car at Gateway?

You could make Hockey Fan and offer on his WRX...

If you want "rust-free", try Lethbridge and area.....you'll pay more but it is so dry down there and also with so little snow that cars have far less rust than Edmonton/Calgary cars...... I used to live down there and the local saying when you saw a rusty car was "Must be a Calgary car."

Thanks for the info guys. The car at gateway is a 95 awd legacy. A WRX would be way out of my budget.
