I would want something with BIG groves to capture the water. I've seen quite a few different types of mats and the rubber, shallow ones wouldn't cut it for me.

I like this mod, it'll just be a matter of finding mats that will line up well with the cuts that need to be made.

 

I spent maybe 10 bucks on hallway runner. I traced my Muz mats and got a near perfect fit. It's got small grooves and is rubber-lined. I don't see the need for big grooves as I knock the bulk of the snow off my shoes before I get in the car. The carpet under the mats still looks brand new. They look great and cover the whole floor (I really don't understand your cuts in the Crappy Tire mats where you left half the floor exposed).

I've been using the same ones for 5 winters and they still look great.

I'd post pics, but I turned off the tap at two membership purchases.

Dufter, throw those OEM mats away. I almost puked.

 

P.S., the mat you cut up for the drivers side actually looks pretty good. Not really sure what you're doing on the passenger side though.

I think I'll get the Muz mats to replace them. Any advice on where to get the best deal? The carpet runner idea is a good solution... do they sit flat or are they kind of lumpy as they try to crawl over the lumps and divots?

As for my passenger mat cuts, it was necessary to cut out the bottom left area to allow the mat to sit relatively flat. It wasn't critical to cover that big hump on the left side since it isn't a place where feet ever hit (the oem mats don't cover it either) and then the flap I left at the bottom covers the floor bar where everyone steps when they get in on that side... it isn't perfect but it keeps it all dry!

 

The fit snugly around the edges. They sit quite flat to the floor where your feet go and curve up and over the raised bar.
