Winter Floor Mats: $33

Winter Floor Mats: $33
Well I was gong to post this in the S2000 Modifications forum but this mod seems a little bush-league compared to all the talk of springs, headers, super chargers and carbon fiber everything... so I'll put it here for now where the hardcore winter drivers reside and if it's moved by a mod, I understand.
I bought two floor mats from Canadian Tire. The brand is "Kracko", model "Deluxe" and they were $16.49 each, give or take a few cents. They were probably the most well stocked mat in the isle with one of the lowest prices and the best compatibility given the measurements I had with me of the OEM mats.
First, I basically traced the driver's side mat with an exacto blade on the new rubber mat. I actually may have to buy another mat and redo it because in retrospect I realize I should not have followed the notch in the top right hand side of that stock mat. Rather, I should have just made one diagonal cut (see the red line I should have followed) in order to create a dam of sorts. That notch will likely form the low point so any snow will just drain onto my rug. Silly me. I guess that is the cost of blazing trails. I might be ok but if it is the low point, I'll have to redo it immediately. Follow the red line! There will still be loads of clearance for the gas pedal.
For the passenger side, I am very happy with the fit. Notice I rotated the mat 180 degrees from how it would intuitively be placed in an average vehicle. This allowed for the least amount of cutting, the best coverage, and the softest part of the mat to nicely crawl over the hump in the passenger foot well. Speaking of which, I didn't bother trying to cover the well on the driver's side since, unlike many passengers, we all know better than to step there!!!
The pictures below tell the rest...
It's just dumb luck that the floor mat posts actually line up with very appropriate slots on the bottom of the home-made driver's mat to help keep it from sliding forward. The posts will end up in front of the two diagonal reinforcements on the corners:
The last thing I learned during this project is that I should get some new carpet mats for the summer! I think I'll get the ones that cover the humps. My driver's side is almost worn through the mat. The guy I bought it from must have been a transvestite with a vast collection stilettos.

Those are great... at twice the price and no grooves to collect the snow and grit and no oportunity to get upclose and personal with your car. I like to have a little heart to heart with my car whenever possible. That's one of the reasons I change my own wheels from summers to winters... it's one of the last remaining things you can do withought a damn computer hooked up to your car! A jack, torque wrench and good music on the radio is all you need...

That's the link to the rubber mats that have grooves in them and are OEM sized. Don't hate on a good thing dude...cuz really, if you want to bring on the hate, I think it'd be easier to hate on a thread about hacked up mats from crappy tire...

But seriously, "smooth cups" are hardly enough to handle something like the "slush blob" MikeyCB mentioned... Form follows Function.
Poor Crappy Tire gets such a hard rap

Those ones may not be custom but finally some rubber mats out there that are made for the S.
