It wasn't a race. It was a drive for the sake of driving - to see stuff, to drive the car on as many twisties as we could. If we wanted "faster", we would have gone straight out to K-country, turned around and come back.

You guys are unclear on my original question:

"Wow, the scenary is amazing. How do you get there from Calgary?"

Then Dave answered with a route that seemed to me like back tracking so I posed my other question.

The "backtracking" route was done on purpose to take advantage of the many, many "twisties" on the 1A. We only had to double back by about a few KMs, MUCH more fun that if we went straight out the #1.
