Shaw Cable Phone
#22
Some things to consider that I don't think were addressed above:
When I am overseas I can call Canada Direct and connect to my local provider and use my calling card. To date Shaw has no provision and a Shaw customer cannot get/use a calling card. There are workarounds such as using your credit card to set up a prepaid account.
Shaw cannot offer customers direct dialed international calling. Customers will have to dial a 1-800 number each time and it's not at all free.
How does Shaw, Primus or Vonage integrate with your home security system? Does an alarm come in when your service is cut at the side of the house?
Does Primus or Vonage offer on site support? Who will Grandma get to fix her phone or her home wiring?
Six calling features included regardless of your wants or needs. Note only the six features are available and no more.
Customers can not get sumultaneous ring, call trace, call display over TV, or visual call waiting.
Shaw customers will pay the same price regardless of their long distance or calling feature use. Take the whole bundle or nothing.
When you go on vacation do you still pay for unused long distance charges?
What assurances will Shaw offer you about the reliability of the phone service? Like it or not, Telus has over 99% reliability when their whole network is taken into account. Consider the number (hundreds of thousands) of subscriber lines in service and the actual lines in trouble.
What kind of sound quality can you expect and will your call quality degrade when more people are on the network?
What does Primus or Vonage contribute to the local economy or community? Do they contribute to anything or just leech? Look at the ad boards next time you are at a hockey game or football game. The local telco, whether you like them or not are a big part of your community, both in participation and employment.

One more curiosity:
We know that long distance is free all over NA, BUT what happens if I'm away and call collect? Will I get hosed?

Just received a reply back from Primus:
Sorry, but I want all my extensions to work.
The services works only through a phone line equipped with a high speed internet connection. This means that only one unit can be plugged. There is a way to activate it on each line but we do not support this option.
