Results for the first two events may be found here: http://pacificgp.com/images/stories/site/s...tackScoring.pdf
So how is the championship decided? Is the last event scored the same as the others? Best out of 3 events (so one could be missed and still be competitive)?

You can see the wickedness of a "participation" formula.

This kind of points scale helps prevent guys from getting last place in every event and somehow making the podium at the end of the season. I chose this implementation as there is so much demand for a limited number of driver slots. Not everyone will be able to get into every event unless they pre-registered for the entire season.

Besides it's way more pimp to get first place out of 15 drivers than first out of five.
Participation formula (see: NASCAR) is the opposite of what you did - fixed top points with a fixed scale down.

To point out what's wrong with your system, a hypothetical... Dietz's GTR isn't at the 3rd event, and 15 other AWDs show up. The fastest AWD at the 3rd event has 15 points, Dietz has 13 despite winning 2 events. O'Farrel gets 2nd again, he now has 23 points. Another guy gets 3rd fastest and has the same amount of points as the guy who won two previous events. 3rd fastest at one event should not equal two wins.

With a fixed top, that scenario would leave O'Farrel with 57, Dietz with 40, and our hypothetical winner 20. O'Farrel rewarded for showing up all 3 times and being consistently fast, Dietz has more points than the guy who showed up once with a huge field.

I understand the counter argument is that with very small fields, a guy could show up at the first 3 events and score 50+ points even though he was really slow. But that doesn't seem as perverse as the way your system plays out.

The alternative (the F1 style) would be to award points only for, say, the top 6. That rewards both speed and participation fairly, as long as the fields are > 6.

Keep in mind... Most of the top drivers are pre-registered for all four events. This formula rewards participation AND performance in every showing. With only one drop, your ability to lay down an awesome performance against a large field is heavily rewarded.

Remember this is a four race series. The foci is placed upon performance in a small number of events, with limited on-track time, against a variable sized field. This is tip of the spear kind of stuff.

No matter what points scheme is deployed in a race series, there will be controversy. However, one rule usually holds true: if you drive fastest you will win. This points structure will undoubtably spawn some interesting conversations in the fan base. AND you know how I like to leverage controversy to create word of mouth.

Yeah, it's all a moot point if the fastest guys show up and podium at all 4 events. Just thinking in the grander scheme.

I mostly thought it was odd that Ray got 6th out of 15 and had the same amount of points as a slower drive who got 11th out of 20.

Keep in mind that you can show up, drive awesome, and make up a major point deficit.

One drop and the championship is scored the same manner. The championship is on a Sunday and the quiet plan is to increase the field size (and therefore the available points).
