I would suggest before messing around with anything else on the car, get a limited slip. I have an LSD and a non LSD Miata and it makes a huge difference. Won't necessarily affect your tire temps, but it will affect your ability to push the car to the point where you're generating heat. The rest of stuff on your wish list can wait.

Alfy - nice report. As far as the air filter goes, don't forget that it was 20° warmer on Friday than it was at the previous events. Heat has a huge impact on power.

And the convertible top won't make a big difference at PGP, as you're topping out around 70 MPH.
LSD, easier said than done.

You've done LSD?

Ahh yes, another valid point. My original fastest run was set in roughly 70º weather with a cleaner air filter.

I didn't think the top had an effect either, but reading some posts on here, it sounded like it might.

^ I am just curious why i am having such a hard time getting my tires up to temp. It is possible that the laser pyrometer that i have it not a very good way of taking tire temps. I have had a few people tell me to get one that you stick in the tires, but i'm just not cool enough for that.

I guess that maybe i should go ask some miata guys...

N.L.
Actually, 130 F with a non-contact/infrared style pyrometer sounds fine. The tire surface looses heat really fast and those pyrometers only measure the surface temp. The highest surface temps I've recorded for R888's is 159 F. On that same run, some tires (or segments of tires) were in the 120's.
If you are seeing surface temps in the 130's after a cool down lap, I think you're golden.

Since the '93+ cars all had LSDs... shouldn't be any harder than a clutch swap.

Are you talking money or actual difficulty? Used NB limited slips are $300-500 on CL. The Mazdaspeed competition limited slip is $711. He had a list of a few grand worth of parts... in the wrong order. The swap is a bit of a pain in the ass, granted. But I was pointing out that if he's dumping money on an on board computer and other stupid shit, he should probably address the glaring short comings of the car first.

^ if you are seeing miata torsen diffs for under $500 then you have looked somewhere that i have not... And i have looked everywhere. You can get the viscous LSD for $300 with the housing, diff, and stub shafts. But those diffs are more prone to breaking, or wearing out.

And not all or the '93 cars had an LSD. From '90-93 they had either an open diff or the viscous LSD, From '94-end of NB I think 2004, they had either an open diff or the torsen LSD. The torsen is the one that all of the spec miata guys want, so naturally they go for much more money than they should.

I've seen several VLSDs on CL for $300ish. A couple NB Torsens for $500ish. I've never inquired, I imagine the SM guys are snapping them up, but I don't see any reason you'd spend more than $500 for any used diff when $711 gets you a new lock up competition diff. Unless you plan on driving on the street a lot...

^ well i found a torsen up in marysville for $500. It is now installed along with the stock rear sway. The only thing that i can say is wow. The car feels like an entirely different car. Mid corner, when you put the power down, it just feels so planted, and you can feel the diff moving power around.

I can't wait to try it out at the next track day. I know that i'll be at least a second faster, putting me in the 1:15's. I may even be down in the 1:14's. The difference is that now I can actually put power down coming out of right hand corners. On the entry to the straight alone i should pick up at least a half second.

The only bad part is that the same day that I got the diff, someone stole my prelude. The prelude that was my brother's first car, then i bought it from him when he got his s2k, and it was my first car.

So I guess that i am truly N.L. (not luder) now...
