Default Slight OT: Passing Emissions, OBDII w/CEL?

The time has come for my Subie to get an emission test. I've got a CEL that comes and goes for a knock sensor. Anyone know if an OBDII car can pass the test w/a CEL on? I'm not sure if this sensor has an effect on emissions, I can imagine it might, but I'd rather try and pass since the issue isn't really affecting the car's performance.

^^ that's where I'm getting confused. I had the S2000 smogged today and asked, and the lady I spoke with said that the car would only fail if it was emissions-related. I don't know if that was for pre-OBDII or not, though. I could see a car passing w/a CEL w/the sniffer, but I'm not sure how that works for OBDII.

Does the CEL come back on after the code is cleared?

^^ Yeah, it turns on and off on it's own, so I stopped clearing it. I know what the culprit is, just not wanting to fix it unless I have to.

From my experience, if a code is being thrown when they scan the OBDII, it's an automatic fail.

You could try borrowing an OBDII scanner (free from Autozone), clear the code right before getting the emmissions test and hope it doesn't throw a code until after the test. I once had a similar issue, and passed the test before the CEL came back on. It'd probably be best to just fix the sensor, though

or you can take the 30 mins it takes to replace a knock sensor and the single 10mm wrench and just do it.

Yeah if your not going to replace the sensor, don't bother if the light is on. There is a chance you can pass if you reset the ecu, get enough miles on the car for it to set its ready codes but before you trip the light again, you just have to time it right. Funny we just discussed this in another thread a few weeks ago for someone else.

You will not pass...even if you clear the code. There is a readiness needed to be done so you can pass. Any check engine will fail emission.
