Sure, they may be overkill for the snow we most often get here. But every few years, we get a good dumping.
And Blizzaks are far superior to "normal" snow tires (or all-season tires) on dry or merely wet roads. To me, they're worth every penny to allow me to enjoy my car a bit more in the horrible weather around here all winter.

I should append that agreement with:
I assume when you say Blizzaks you mean the LM-22 or 25 and not the WS-50 or WS-60. The WS series are awesome in the snow/ice but a bit less confidence inspiring in other conditions.
I've also heard a lot of good things about the Michelin Alpin PA2, though I've never driven on them before.

It is good to learn how to drift. Seriously, i just sold my S2000 after 3 years driving daily on Bridgestone RE050's. If I had any hills to climb or go down, I'd catch a ride with someone else, but other than that, 3 years, no accidents. On my new car, I'm going to give a try on a set of Goodyear F1 Eagle All Season this year since I keep lighting up the DSC all the time when it is around 40F. Maybe it is just my foot that needs to readjust to the extra torque on low revs.
There are a couple of good articles on Tirerack about winter vs. all season vs. summer tires:
