I've caught onto this thread quite late but I must say at the least... very interesting. This thread combined with my glass of merlot has made my Monday evening quite entertaining!

i gurantee you i can drive.
I thought the same thing when I was 18.

Then I met some people who actually know what they were doing.

Odds are you can't drive nearly as well as you think you can. Two years of driving on the street does not afford you the opportunity to learn car control near the limit, and it certainly doesn't afford you the opportunity to learn your limits. Without a benchmark (i.e. lap times at a closed track or an old guy in a 110 HP Miata pulling away from you) you may feel like you're hot shit and driving the car at 10/10, but I think you'd be amazed at how slow you were on the track.

I got my S2000 when I was 22... did some drives, was faster than some, slower than some, thought I had it down. Went to my first track day, and was 6 seconds/lap slower than the other stock S2000s - 1:38 vs 1:32. That's an eternity. The real kicker was my 3rd track day, on R compound tires, getting passed by an old guy in a mostly stock MR-2 Spyder (the 130 HP variety) after getting my lap times down into the 1:31 range. Of course, he was walking the guys in Z06s and 911 Turbos, but hey, you've got 240 horsepower so nobody in a Miata would stand a chance against you.
