He's right in a way... other than the Junction and Alki, West Seattle isn't what you'd call lively. And the options in the Junction may not appeal to everyone.
But yeah, if having a nicer/bigger townhome is the goal, you have to give up walking distance to bars and restaraunts.

Northgate works because the cost is lower and there are plenty of transportation options to get to the "scene". Not ideal, but an option.
It also depends on what you consider walking distance.

My point was that this guy is 22 and single and people are suggesting areas like Northgate. If you want to hang out at Azteca, that's cool, but if you want someplace with a decent scene, I'd go to capitol hill, fremont, West seattle or ballard. Parking is a nightmare in Ballard and Capitol Hill and everywhere else is more expensive than WS.

Then again, I wouldn't expect Northgate to be much of an improvement, but in the plus column: the rent would less expensive.

Considering that experience included dodging bullets, 18 incidents where a car was stolen or broken into, daily deposits of various bodily fluids on the entrance to your building, entertaining overtly aggressive pan-handlers, mingling with corner dealers, and any life necessity commanding a 50% or more price premium [...]

You shouldn't pick a place to live just because you frequent the neighborhood bar once a week.

There's a reason that rent is cheaper in northgate.
But everyone likes different things.
