When I had Mobil1 sampled after 3000 miles including track days, it was good to go for more miles. Same at 4500 miles. Now I just change the oil and filter every 5000 miles, whether it needs it or not.

Turning darker is just the oil's way of telling you that the detergent is doing its job.

The explosion of advertising for "high mileage oil" and "high revving oil" and "SUV oil" and "long mileage oil" and "strawberry love" oil is mainly what makes me think all this stuff is marketing hype. Engine oil is pretty much a commodity, but the manufacturers have found that they can differentiate their products by trying to portray them as "specially suited to your needs". Especially if you like strawberries.

BMW and the like specify 15k mile oil changes on their newer cars-- the new Mobil1 is an answer to the owners of their cars who use non-factory oil. Mobil1 will pay repair costs if it can be determined oil related failure. It has a slightly different additive package than the regular Mobil1, whether it protects any more is unclear. Supposedly the filters are more than adequate to do the job -- I have heard that many times under hard load oil goes through a bypass valve anyway due to restriction in the filter flow and the filter isn't doing anything at that point. I change both every 5k miles/6months anyway...it's cheap peace of mind compared to the relative expense of the rest of the car.

Flame away, I know you will.

With the Fumoto valve, it takes at most 15 minutes, and no more than $30, to change my oil. When a single track day costs perhaps $500 (including the price of admission, gas, and tire and brake pad wear), spending 15 minutes and $30 every 5000 miles seems like a small price to pay for peace of mind.

BTW, whan will someone design a car with an oil filter that doesn't spill oil all over the engine when you change the filter?

Ever see a BMW oil filter?

No, but if you only have to change oil every 15,000 miles in a BMW, it seems kind of a waste for it to have a user-friendly oil filter.

Wrap some tin foil directly under your filter before taking it off so that the foil directs the oil away from the engine and into the drain pan below. When just changing your filter, you only lose the oil in the filter and if you're quick enough, not much will get out of the filter before you get it off. It's somewhere is xviper's tips and works like a champ.

Word from Road Rage, the resident oil guru, is why run synthetic if you're going to change it every 3k or so? Dino is good enough and cheaper for those intervals.
