Default Mobil 1 - 15K mile synthetics

Is this the real deal or more gimmick than anything else?

Could you really pour this sucker into an F20/22C and have it run for 15K and expect the same kind of "results" as switching up every 3K miles or so with the regular Mobil 1 sythetic?

Marketing, mostly. The question is more whether the filter will last that long than whether the oil will.

I usually go 5K miles and then change oil and filter.

I've been going 3750 miles per the manual, but if I can extend that longer with peace-of-mind by all means sign me up.

What makes you think it's marketing v. actual engineering prowess, technology advancement enabling the longer intervals between oil changes?

'Cause the oil has been good to go longer for years. Now that "dino oil" is getting closer and closer to the premium synthetics, they are trying to justify their costs.

They probably add a few more detergents and anti-oxidents and such. But remember that the filters aren't designed for that interval.

If you really want to know, you can pay a few bucks and do oil sampling.

Not that it probably matters with your vehicle at this point since it's probably out of warranty but I'd ask Honda and see what they say.

Personally, anytime I hear about stuff like this, I'm skeptical of their claims. Will they back up what they say? If something bad happens to your motor directly and solely linked to not changing your oil for 15k, will they pay for the repairs?

So as long as I just change out the filter every 3,750 miles or so, I'm good to go?

id est, i can skip buying the $25 6 quart Costco pack and just buy more quarts as I go along for a good 3-4 oil changes...

nah, i don't think i'll go for it. i don't drive my car as much any more.

Maybe they added Chromium-picolinate for a leaner, more energetic motor.

Some people do that, yes. They don't report any problems. Not always easy to change the filter without spilling a lot of oil, though. Park or jack the car up on a slant, maybe.

The cost of oil and filter is quite small compared to the total ownership cost. Doing whatever makes you feel comfortable is probably the best option.

I don't know why you'd want to... For $30 for a 6-pack of Mobil-1 from Costco, $6 for an oil filter from HardTopGuy and less than an hour of your time, you can change your oil whenever you like...

Even after 3000 miles, engine oil turns from a nice, clear amber to dark brown and gooey (and I was using Mobil-1 full synthetic). I always thought my car sounded much smoother after an oil change, too.

You just lost all credibility with that statement.
