I want to go and try on some helmets in the Portland area .. anyone recommend a good shop??

Go to Bob Lamphere's Honda Motorcycle Dealership off of Hwy 217 by Washington Square. They have the largest selection of Moto Helmets in the area. That being said, they are also the most expensive. If I were you I would try on helmets there, find a helmet you like and then purchase it from Chaparrel, or another internet site.

I'm not what the main stores are in town for auto racing helmets ...

Well, I bought a moto helmet at Lanphere's... it was on sale, full face... what more could you want?? But if you want one labeled as an auto racing helmet you could try Race Central... they might have a couple you can try on, but beware, the customer service there blows!
