Convertable Roll Protection Requirements
BMWCCA (Puget Sound Region) changed their convertible rules. Yes, I know I'm the only one here who has been taking my S to these events, but the reason they changed is to match up with the CCA national policy. Which means we may see Spokane do the same thing.
The BMWCCA national policy requires convertables must have fixed roll protection (leaves it as a local option whether it must be a full SCCA-type roll bar) AND 5- or 6-point harnesses. In other words, the S2K roll hoops are OK but only if you have full harnesses for driver and passenger.
I haven't checked to see if Scott and the Spokane people are going to implement the same thing, but if this is coming from their national org they may have to.
Has anyone put 6-point harnesses into their S without adding a roll bar and race seats?

Actually, they have not been allowing anything without fixed roll hoops to run for quite a while. The new requirement is that you have to have a 5- or 6-point harness, not that you have to have roll hoops.
And pop-up roll protection has not been allowed for a couple years.
As I said, I don't know if Spokane is going to follow suit or not. But it seems quite possible.

At least the Z3 and Z4 have fixed roll hoops, like the S2000.
The new rules would disallow those BMWs as well as the S2000, unless an aftermarket harness is added.
Adding a harness to a car without a rollbar that clears the driver's helmet is a very bad idea. It sounds like their new rules would not only allow that, but in fact encourage it.

That's correct, the new rules disallow the Z3s and Z4s unless they have harnesses.
I've thought about this before, and all the advice I've read basically says the same thing: roll bar, harness, and racing seat should be added as a package. Adding any of them separately can be a problem. In this case, they seem to be primarily concerned with drivers being ejected from a rolling open car.
And if you do have a roll bar, you run the risk of smashing your head into it in a non-rollover accident. So the whole thing gets a bit dicy unless you plan to just use the car as a dedicated track car.
Oh, and early Z3s did not have fixed roll roops, IIRC. They added them later on, I think about the time they came out with the M-roadster.

Good news from Scott Adare:
No plan on making that change. Roadsters are OK as long as they have Factory or suitable rollover hoops. No convertibles (as they are considered different from roadsters)
