If you hand your keys over to an unlicensed person, are you really considered an innocent third party?

... Doing that sounds like it would be in the same boat as selling booze to a minor without checking ID.

Do you know they are unlicensed? Should you know they are unlicensed? What if they have a valid-looking piece of plastic that they show you?

As it happens, when I was selling my CRX I let two people test drive it. One couple took it out for a drive without me in the car. Turned out they were friends of my next-door neighbor. I didn't ask to see a license.

The guy who bought the car test drove it with me in the car. I didn't ask to see his license either.

The car was not wrecked, was not confiscated by the cops, and was sold. YMMV.

Selling booze is a highly regulated activity. Selling a car, not so much. And I never get carded when I buy some alcohol, so even there they use some judgment.

Yeah!

BTW, if the person wanting to testdrive your car is Ray ... run for your life and lock those keys up in a safe somewhere. Capt. Oversteer is on the loose.

I've never had to register my booze at the Department of Alcohol, nor have I ever paid tax on booze I bought anywhere but a licensed brand new booze vendor (as opposed to buying a second hand car).

And I get carded every time I buy booze or go for a test drive. IMO the car/booze vendors are using proper judgement each time.

... And no, I would not consider buying a used car without test driving it first, & preferrably even poking around under the car - you never know how some of these home mechanics treat their vehicles.

Many years ago I was selling a car and let a guy take it out for a test drive. He didn't get very far and the engine blew up. Not a good transaction to say the least. I ended up selling the engine (even being blown) and the car shell seperate.

thats a tough one. not to long ago there was a post in s2000 talk about a guy that let a 19yr old kid test drive his s2k(he was selling of course) and the kid put it into a concrete barrier and totaled it. it was a very madening story.

i say use sound judgement, most people arent just going to beat on a car while youre in it with them. i remember, when i was a kid, my dad was selling is 79' 911SC to a guy and he wanted to test drive it. we went on the test drive and the guy asked if he could open it for a couple of gears, i though that was a nice gesture instead of just randomly hitting it.
