Default Aged Tires: A Driving Hazard

This was on 20/20 and is well worth watching. Watch until the end, because some of the most important stuff you need to hear and see is past the middle of the segment. It could save your life or that of someone you love.

This was posted in the Wheel and Tire thread.....my bad for the repost.

The way to tell the date is by a 3 or 4 digit number on either the outer or inner wall of the tire. First 2 numbers correspond to the week of the year, and the last 1 or 2 digit correspond to the year. For example, 129 would mean 12th week of 99'. 3405 would mean 34th week of 05'. So on and so forth (I guess there are no numbering system prior to the 90's). Details are in the video.

That was some good info. I was about to shrug it off thinking "no shit old tires are bad, why is this posted on a car forum?" I wasn't aware that tire dealers were selling aged tires though, I'll be checking the date codes on family member's tires soon.

Yeah, you ever hear of those big tire sales on the radio and tv; how they're blowin' out overstock of tires, etc..... That's cuz' they're getting rid of the "old / dated" tires on the shelf.

A lot of people don't know about the dates stamped on the tire, so it's a good thing to check it out. 3405 would mean 34th week of 05

The rear tires on my Chevy were made the 3rd week of 2002...

But they weren't old when I bought them. I bought new tires for the car from Tire Rack shortly after moving to Washington from Hawaii in November 2001.

Excuses are a core competency of any veteran track driver.
