I am a Winter Haven native, so I have some knowledge of the place... I live in Lakeland now wich is about 20 mins west.
Winter Haven is a pretty sleepy little town, and there really isn't much to do other than Cypress Gardens which is closed at the moment. It is getting harder and harder to get to Orlando from WH because of the congestion on Hwy27. You probably can get a good deal on a house, but that depends on location. I know that there are some people from Orlando that have 'vacation' homes south of WH in the more rural areas around Lk Buffum.
If you have a specific neighborhood you have questions about I'll be happy to try to answer them.

Actually, they are opening the 28th. And there has been precious little going on since they closed back in November. I wonder if they have taken any of the rides apart yet because from the road it doesn't look like it. I really hope they decide to keep the Starliner, but I guess that's not likely.
