Softtop noise

Softtop noise
Its been about 4 months since Ive had the car and the soft top seems to be making a lot creaking/tapping noise. Every time I pull in to a driveway or take a corner it creaks.. would WD-40 around the softtop hinges solve this problem?

Hi steven,
The hardtops do that as well. It is actually frame that is slightly twisting causing that. You can try applying some shin-etsu grease along the seal of the soft top and it might aide in some of the noise.

I would not use WD-40 as it will dissolve/break down any grease that is already on the joints. White lithium grease sprayed on all the pivot points/joints of the frame will help a lot. Just put a towel behind the joint and hold it there with one hand to trap any overspray while you spray with the other.

WD-40 is actually cleaner / de-greaser / rust remover. It functions as a short term lubricant but you don't want to use it on something that requires a grease, because the first thing it does is knock the grease off
"WD 40 is a very thin lubricant that is used as a water displacer (that is what WD stands for). It is suppost to be used as a method for freeing up seized parts. WD 40 does an ok job as a lubricant and a degreaser however, it is a very thin oil and will not last as long and is not designed to be a long term lubricant. WD 40 does an ok job as a degreaser if you wipe it down, but so does water."
This is something I actually learned just a few years ago after soaking my various bicycles' chains and additional moving parts with WD-40. Oops!
