Default So Random Oil change quesition

Ok so im sure the topic of oil has been beaten to death. With that being said I have 2 questions for you guys (and Gals)

I have this friend who has a Mitsubishi 3000 gt vr-4 He used to swear by royal purple. I as well like the stuff and have never had a problem. I just got off the phone with him and he tells me "I usually run a bottle of ATF thru my engine about 100 miles before I change the oil. Now I heard from a bunch of people that royal purple is crap now so im switching to red-line synthetic " Ok now im not an idiot but im also not a technician. Who here has ever heard that, the Atf thing? I personally told him to just use the engine cleaner. To my knowledge wouldn't Atf gum up the lifters. Also would cause hot spots inside the engine? Second question is What do you guys prefer? I've already heard to stay away from royal purple in the rear end. Im kinda new to Honda's and all my experience comes from euros so im used to 0w-40 lol..... Please guys enlighten me

I am running Mobil1 in my S.

The ATF thing - I had a tech once that swore by it to soften seals so they would not leak on an older car, but even he used a small amount 1/4 qt.

You do have to remember that your friend is running a Chrysler minivan engine (built by Mistu).

all that gunk thats in your engine burnt oil and what not, the ATF helps getting that out. for some reason that stuff clings to ATF. its perdy much a cleaner. not bad for your car but not the best to run for a wile. thats all i know.

ATF pretty much can be used as a cleaner. Diesal trucked run about a qaurt into their fuel filters to clean their injectors. I've seen a lot of people run ATF in their oil as a cleaner. I'll never do it but I've seem it done a million times.

I run AMSOIL in my motor trans and diff.

AMSOIL XL 5w-30 Extended Life Synthetic Motor Oil

AMSOIL Heavy Duty Oil Filter. (Thing looks cool!)

AMSOIL Synthetic Manual Synchromesh Transmission Fluid

AMSOIL Severe Gear SAE 75w-90 Synthetic Extreme Pressure Differential Lubricant

As far as ATF in your engine to clean it out.... I probably wouldn't do that unless you think you have a problem with sludge or if you engine has over a 100,000 miles on it.

For whatever reason, I'd be more prone to run SeaFoam in my oil a hundred miles prior to an oil change than ATF.

Done that - I used the Seafoam method on the Lex when I first got it - wall of smoke behind the car - it was kinda cool, scary, but cool.
