Post Late Spring 2010 – Victoria 3-Day Drive

...................

Victoria!

.................................
.....

This is our first "International” drive and our longest drive to date at 3-Days

....
.. ..

This three-day drive will take us up to the enchanting city of Victoria, British Columbia! On Saturday we will travel up the western side of Puget Sound and then take a car ferry to Victoria. Sunday there will be many options open to see the sights – The Empress Hotel, Butchart Gardens, Antique Row, High Tea, etc. On Monday we will take another car ferry out through the famous San Juan Islands of Washington – then back to Portland. This promises to be a memorable trip!

DRIVE RATING:

.. . Driving = 2 (out of 5)
Scenery = 4 (out of 5)

SATURDAY MAY 22 – 6-1/2 Driving Hours & 352 Miles

We will have an early departure from the Portland area at and head up I-5 to Olympia and then skirt the west side of Hood Canal as we make our way to Port Angeles.

..

..

..

..

Is that a whale? No, it is one of the many nuclear submarines that ply these waters on their way to and from their base at Bremerton.

..

..
In Port Angeles we will find lunch as we wait for our sailing on the ferry “Coho”.

..

We’ll pass across the Strait of Juan de Fuca as we head into Canada. Our 90 minute crossing will end in the picturesque inner harbor of Victoria.

..

..

..
After clearing Canadian Customs, we will be met by the Victoria contingent of S2KI. They will accompany us on a scenic drive up the west side of Vancouver Island to Sooke and Port Renfrew.

..

..

Then it is back to Victoria to find our individual hotels and check-in. Saturday evening is open to explore the many scenic sites of the inner harbor.

.....

SUNDAY MAY 23 –

.....

There are many things to do and see in Victoria. We will offer various options for our participants –

.....

* Take a double-decker tour bus of Victoria. This allows you to hop on and off at any point you wish to explore...

..

* A visit to Antique Row – a street of unique Canadian/British antiques.

..

* Spend some time in the Empress Hotel.

..

..

* An afternoon tour of Butchart Gardens – a world-class garden not to be missed.

..

..

..

* Tour Craigdarroch Castle – the former home of a Scottish coal baron.

..

* Try “High Tea” at the Empress or at Butchart Gardens. What is High Tea? It is the old British tradition of afternoon tea in a formal setting. They serve tea (of course) and a tray of tasty sandwiches and finger foods which you eat as you people-watch (Dress Code).

..

..

* Take a tour of all the sights in a horse drawn carriage.

..

* Walk around the downtown area exploring the many shops and fine restaurants (try the Fish & Chips!)

..

* Take in a movie at the National Geographic IMAX Theater.

.....

You can join in on these options or just go exploring on your own. Victoria is very compact and you can easily walk to most of these attractions once you are downtown.

..

..

..

..

.....

None of these things interest you? Will you be having separation-anxiety from your baby? Don’t despair – we will have handouts for two optional tours of southern Vancouver Island (as suggested by our S2KI brethren) that you can take.

..

..

MONDAY MAY 24 – 4-1/2 Driving Hours & 264 Miles

We will have a leisurely departure today. We will meet at the ferry terminal in Sidney for our return trip. This will be on a Washington State Ferry which will take us on a cruise through the very scenic San Juan Islands. And, we will hope for some productive whale-watching.

..

..

We will arrive in Anacortes in the afternoon.

..

After clearing U.S. Customs we will make our way back to Portland.

..

For information on the various sights to see and hotel information in Victoria, see the next post.

...................S2Ki Oregon - The fun starts here!

This is going to be a “rain-or-shine” drive due to the hotel and ferry reservations – we can’t just move it to the following weekend.

...

Note:This is the Oregon S2000 Owners Forum. As such, our drives are exclusively for S2000s and their owners in Oregon and S.W. Washington.

Our drives are not open to the general public, which includes those who used to own an S2000, hope to own one, those with similar cars, or those who think the drive we've put together sounds fun and would like to tag along, etc.

We are not trying to be snobby here, but are trying to clarify what we are about – The fun and adventure of Honda S2000 ownership
. Thanks!

Travel Information for Victoria –

Note
: A U.S. Passport is required to enter Canada. You may have heard that you can enter with just your driver’s license, but this applies only to residents of northern Washington, not to you (and it requires an “enhanced” driver’s license).

If you don’t have a passport, plan ahead. Once you send in the documents it may take 10 weeks to receive your passport. You can pick up application forms at your local post office or you can apply online – Website: Here

The Waddling Dog Website: Here.. ($85 per night)

The Empress Hotel Website: Here .. ($232 to $1600 per night!)

…..

Note that hotels are more expensive the closer they are to the Victoria Inner Harbor area. We will be traveling to Victoria during “high season” so the longer you wait to make your hotel reservations, the more you will pay.

…..

If you REALLY want to make points with your sweetie, you might consider booking the Empress Hotel for one night and the Waddling Dog for the other night.

The Empress is one of those “once-in-a-lifetime” places to stay. And it will make a great “home base” to use while exploring Victoria. Move to the Waddling Dog on Sunday when we head out for our visit to the Butchart Gardens. The Waddling Dog is in Saanichton which is very near our departure ferry terminal for the next day and is only 20 minutes from downtown.
