The new Si is certainly an entertaining car. Having the K20 i-VTEC motor, LSD, 6-speed tranny and all, it has all the right cards to play the game. I think Honda has finally listened to its customers and build a fun, reliable, and inexpensive (relatively) sporty car.
As much as I respect Honda's effort, the new Si is still facing a tough competition.
A manager at Motorcars Honda said their asking price for the new Si is around $21000+tax. Navi is additional, as are other accessories. Obviously there will be no discounts of any kind.
Young enthusiasts may well be drooling over this car, but how many youngsters can afford a $22000 vehicle? The ones that CAN spend that kind of money, would they still want a Civic? Or are they gonna look for more performance (WRX, SRT-4), more prestige (used Audi, Lexus, BMW), or more bling (Supra, RX-7, S2000)?
Frankly, if I were to spend $22,000 my own money, the new Si is DEFINITELY not going to be on my list. Even within Honda's lineup, the Acura RSX Type-S is aging through its life cycle and will likely include some discount. If the final price is close enough, which one will be the better car?

They will not have any problem selling this car. In fact, Immke Honda, one of the largest in the district only gets 2 on their hand and they are already presold.
Meanwhile, under 18k Civic Coupe and Sedans are flying out the dealership door.
Si will not become victim of crossshopping or mega mass production. Honda knows this and in fact, even if you want to get one, you will have to wait a decent time to own one. Although, your concerns are legit, I don't think the new Si will have sales issue anytime soon.
Also, making it little out of reach from boy racers are a good thing. People who will be buying Si in most cases will be Honda enthusaists.
R32 is to VW and the new Si is to Honda. Nuff said.

not to get off topic, but is the ap2 really that much quicker than the ap1?...i know this has been debated at length. when i bought my car they had an 04 and an 03 on the lot and of course i got a better price on the 03, but really i got it b/c i didnt like only having vtec from 6-8k instead of 6-9k. looking at the 1/4 mile times in the mags, they seem the same to me ap1 typically ranges from 13.8 (motor trend) - 14.2 (car and driver) and ap2 13.9 (road and track) to 14.1 (car and driver). has anyone put them side by side?
