Default Spent a day with an engineer at BMW in Munich

I spent today at the BMW plant in Munich and I got to take a tour with an engineer who has been with the company for quite some time. After the tour we sat down for some coffee and I got some pretty interesting information that I had not heard before.

1. The S54 engine in the new M roadster is just a stopgap before they put the new M3's V8 in there in about 2 years.

2. BMW will be dropping the SMGII system in favor of a dual-clutch system similar to VAG's unit that will debut on the E90 M3.

3. A successor to the Z8 is currently in the early stages of development. He was very secretive about this and would not tell me much, but he said it will be using the V10 out of the M5 and M6.

He was a very nice and straightforward guy who has been with the company for a very long time, so I put a pretty good deal of faith in what he said. Obviously other people may just call BS on this, but at least it gives us something to talk about

Well I have to go, I am late for a meeting with a beer and a bratwurst!

A V8 in the Z4? The M3 motor in the Z3 over powered the car and resulted in a less than satisfying driving experience. I hope the propeller heads get it right this time around.

Nice info. I know that BMW loves the "self steer" function of their higher end steering gears - the ones that will counter sterr a skid by itself. Eventually, BMW wants to put it on every car. I picked that up when I used to work for ZFLS a couple years ago.
