Shopping for Car Insurance
#11
USAA has some pretty strict qualifications...
Sam.. shop your insurance.. although Michigan has some very unique coverages and on average, is more expensive than Ohio. Also depends on the amount of coverage... Ohio has the nations lowest state minimum (12.5/25/7.5)... I think Michigan was (20/40/10). Either way, both aren't a lot of coverage... Just keep that in mind, especially if you are comparing your policy to an Ohio policy.
(For what it's worth, find someone in New Jersey.... you'll feel better about your policy )
Scotty... I'm not a subject matter expert..I just happened to read some insurance mumbo jumbo on the back of a milk carton

Dave;
I've been using Erie Insurance for 20 plus years, auto, home and liability umbrella. I have 08 Camry SE, 05 MDX and 05 S2000 total of $105/mo. I'm actually on Erie Preferred. They are quite selective. I also find my umbrella to be a great value for peace of mind, considering the price. YMMV
I have been treated very well with claims, though all have been relatively small. I would suggest that you also research customer satisfaction, especailly on the claims side. Saving a little on the front end, probably not worth it on the back.
If you believe in surveys, I remember one recently in the newspaper that ranked USAA first, Amica second, and Erie third, in customer satisfaction. This might have been a JD Power, or some other survey, can't remember exactly. I have always wanted to look into Amica, but haven't priced them. I think they do most sales on line. Otherwise, I have not found anyone to beat the prices I get from Erie, since I'm not eligible for USAA.

Cheapest I found in Ohio was Grainge (just moved up here from GA).
2006 S2000, 2008 Acura RL....both 300k in coverage.
I haven't had a need for them, so I can't say anything about customer service except that they were great when I signed up (through an agent).

Ok..
First off... USAA is nearly untouchable in many of the programs (not just insurance). There is a reason their NPS is off the charts because of the service and pricepoint that they have...
Second... price shop your insurance... insweb, insurance.com, etc I think all provide comparison rating. progressive.com has it built into their program as well.
Third... if possible, package your insurance with other insurance (if applicable). Compare it with bundling, and compare without. A lot of times, companies like State Farm and Allstate can be more competitive because they can package home owners and auto liability into a package and provide a discount (multi-policy). Monoline carriers tend to be at a disadvantage there.
Good luck with insurance hunting.. there are soooo many factors that go into a rate... My wife and I can quote seperately get two quotes for our vehicles and I guarentee you that the rate would be different... Age, vehicle, amount of coverage, credit, driving history, residence status, use of vehicle, etc.. all factor...
Just my $.02... This is all speculative btw.. I think I overheard some people talking about insurance at the bar the other day..

While price is important, to me service is more important. No point in having the cheapest insurance company if when you need there help there aren't there for you. I know....I use to have Prudential and they screwed me big time but the were cheap!!
