In case you haven't driven an STi, you're more than welcome to try mine. My car is currently Stage II by Cobb, it drives very differently from stock, but it gives you an idea of what you can get from an exhaust and a tune.
Contrary to many, I alternate between S2000 and STi for my daily commutes. I find both cars to be civil enough for everyday use, and they both provide much joy on the road. The S2000 is undoubtedly a sports car. It sounds, feels, and handles like one. It looks awesome too, and the drop-top experience is simply priceless! I just wish it comes with more usable power on the low end. On city streets below 5000rpm it almost feels as slow as the Corolla next to you.
In my opinion, the Subaru is ugly (sorry), but it performs like a monster. While people complain about turbo lag, consider the fact that you only have to wait until 3000rpm to reach the powerband, as opposed to 5000rpm. When turbo hits, acceleration is immediate and nothing short of phenomenal. In almost every gear, there is more usable power than the stock F20C can ever produce. Moreover, forced induction engines are much more mod-friendly. Simple bolt-ons can yield significant power increase.
I would also strongly recommend checking out the Evo. It is ultimately more sporty than the STI. Whereas the Subaru takes advantage of its superior off-boost torque, the Evo compensates its shortcomings with dramatic turbo power. It may ride bumpier and noisier than the Subaru, but its handling is more communicative and as sharp as the S2000, It offers more interior space too, and you get standard Recaro seats.
Having driving all three "with enthusiasm", my conclusion is as follows:
-The Evo is an extreme sport machine, best of three on the track but worse on the street
-The STi is slightly less extreme and more user friendly
-The S2000 is uber pimp, looks awesome, handles like a dream, but needs an extra 50-100hp to keep up.

I thought long and hard about doing the same thing. Driving a crappy car around half the year is getting old
Don't tell us anything different

Maybe i missed it, but if you're looking for a daily driver, an STi is a good choice. I only use my s2k as a fun car.
Personally, if i traded in my TL today, i'd either get a TSX or a GTI with the DSG tranny. It isn't easy finding a loaded, black GTI with DSG, but it's a nice car. My only concern is that i'm used to Honda reliability and not the probs that come with a VW
