The car can be new or used
Must be an AWD

I was looking for the same thing..

it i was to get something nice and AWD.. i would go for an audi S4.

you can get a nice one used for around $15,000 now. the v6 twin turbo ones.

just a thought.. there are plenty of other cars out there.

you open to SUVs also? you can pick up an 2003 MDX for under that, or a 2004 (slight changes in model) for about that <private party>

Why AWD? I live in an area that gets plenty of snow and I have never had trouble getting through. Is there another reason I'm missing?

A preowned 2005.5-2006 Audi A4 2.0T would likely run you right about $20k for an example that is decently equipped. In this market, I would have little doubt you would get into one for $20k or under. There are over 80 examples within 200 miles and over 1400 in the country.

Another idea would be an 2004 R32. The market shows a range of $16k-$22k. Autotrader shows over 100 available in that range, but you will have to travel > 200 miles.

Knowing how much you loved your last GTI, I'd say the R32 would be a good fit. However, the R32 is more boy racer and the A4 is more luxury sport. And, if you are going to take someone out on a date, the A4 may give a more sophisticated and mature image. I can just picture your date having difficulty getting in and out of those R32 seats (which may or may not be a bad thing ;-).
