I know a couple of people on here Have denon stuff if they want to chime in.
I can certainly vouch for Denon, having owned 3, most recently purchasing a 2809 thru Jake. I think another big benefit of upconverting HDMI recievers, if you are set on mounting above a fireplace, is cable reduction. When I moved my old 5600 series out of the family room, I got rid of enough cable and interconnects to fill a 2 foot square box.
If you are set on running above the fireplace, you really only want to deal with one cable into the TV.
Again I'm really not trying to talk you out of putting your TV above the fireplace. However, just consider it carefully. Only you know your room. I will tell you that I have a very difficult family room for tv/audio placement. I just elected to have custom made cabinets done. They are all hardwood, to my design, in my specific stains, very high quality, made in Ohio. Two cabinets, for less money than buying one "home theatre" cabinet at any retailer. Better yet, from a furniture store right in your neighborhood.
All I'm saying is there are always options. Just think it thru, and get what you want.
