With all due respect, you made your day worse, the officer didn't. You knew this would happen eventually, right? So, either accept it as a cost of running no plate, pay it, and move on, or run a plate and not have to wonder when the next one will come.
I did the same thing for years with window tint that I knew was illegal. And when I got my ticket, I just considered it as part of the cost for having my car look the way I wanted.
And I only grumbled under my breathe for a few seconds as I pulled away from the curb, tossing the citation in the passenger seat in disgust. Then I was over it.

It's obvious. Cops would rather pull over a civic, mustang, s2000, blah blah before pulling over a dodge astro van with no front plates. As much as every cop will tell you differently, for the most part, it's pretty much true.
I know it's the law and of course he has every right to give me a ticket for breaking it. I'm just saying it's unfortunate I had to be pulled because of the type of car I drive.
I had a plate in my window. Why would he of not pulled over one of the thousands of cars infront of me that had no plates showing at all...
Maybe I was just the first car he saw with no plates, right? hahaha.. oh well bad luck for me.

Can't say we didn't warn you about the Polaris area Half this thread is about Polaris.
But I honestly thought Delaware would get me before Columbus. A friend of mine in a civic hatch got pulled over by Westerville. The cop clearly stated that as long as he put the plate on the windshield that he was fine..

It is illegal for the plate to be on the dash. At least we are not in Cali where they also look for illegal mods.
I think you would be better off bending up your plate, mounting it on a license plate braket, keeping it in the trunk of your car and telling the officer it got pulled off in a car wash, and you haven't had a chance to get it remounted. That seems to work for some people I know.
And as far as your comment about Cali, I'm wondering if Ohio will start doing this if the economy gets much worse around here.

A funny thing just happened...
a friend of mine was pulled over in his modified 240 for a burnt out headlight. He had no front plates as well...
The cop asked him if he had front plates. My friend pulled it out and put it on his dashboard. According to my friend, the cop's exact words were, "ok, that's fine"
Btw, this was a delaware cop.
