Hit by uninsured driver - total loss?
UPDATE (5/16/2010)
About a month after my accident, I picked up a Silverstone MY04 with 29K miles on it & brand new tires. Vehicle is completely stock, no lip or spoiler. Previous owner (Cincy/Newport area) upgraded to a 911 Carrera 4S - it looked AWESOME in the garage!
As many have suggested, I did end up getting another S, because I was just in love with it. I test drove a friend's Evo VIII, mazdaspeed 3, and '06 WRX, but I still ended up buying another S.
Anyway, I've driven the AP2 for 3 weeks now (I knew my account name was going to come back to bite me one day...), and I definitely feel some differences. There is almost no studder from the engine at low revs. Under normal driving, I could almost always be in a gear higher than what I'm used to at a particular speed. The flywheel is heavy - I feel it every time I try to shift quickly. The handling feels quite different. The back end feels way less eager/loose. For the first time entering an on ramp, I got understeer. I feel like the rear end on my AP2 is less communicative as far as giving warning is concerned - maybe I haven't pushed it enough, and also it could be the tires. Anyway, I'm really happy with the car; everyone thinks I got my old car fixed

Start with some pictures first
STORY:
It was 10~10:30pm, I was driving northbound on Cleveland Ave (between Morse Rd and 161). I was going 35-40 MPH, and all of a sudden, I see a car somewhat sideways in front of me. At that point, I realized that said car had lost control, and that it was in a spin coming in my direction. It was already too late, because my airbags went off immediately after I realized the situation.
I was able to walk out with a swollen lower lip due to the airbag. The other guy (mid 90's Altima) was in a bit of pain. I looked at both cars, and discovered that it was a head on collision. At that point, a Merc pulled over, and I thought the driver was being nice and stopped since he saw the accident. I went over to ask if he saw exactly what happened, and he told me that the guy in the Altima rear-ended him first, and tried to pass & get away, at which point he lost control...
The guy had no insurance, no license, no ID. So...I guess this is what you call unfortunate.
INSURANCE:
$13500 for total loss OR $9000 + keep the car
What do you guys think? This is a MY01, with 81k miles on it.
Other parts added:
wheels
intake (AEM v2)
exhaust (T1R 60RT)
HU + DCI mod (Alpine...forget the exact model)
Any advice is welcome since this is the first accident I've been in. In 6+ years of driving, I've only gotten 1 ticket (speed), so my insurance was reasonably low, but I'm sure it'll shoot through the roof now...
Thanks in advance.

^^Agreed with above. Total it and move on. You can get another S in good shape with lower mileage for that money or use it as a down payment for something else.
Sorry to hear about it, but at least you made it out ok!

Sorry about your loss, I'd take the money and buy another "S". The money the insurance company offered, $13,500, is great deal considering what they seem to be selling for during these economic times. Good Luck and at least your OK!

OMG!! Sorry about the S but your are ok and that is what is important. I would take the $13.5K and use part of it to have the guys legs broken!!

thanks everyone. i was pretty devastated this whole week, because i loved my S, as everyone here does.
initially, i was thinking maybe i need a change, and go with an 06-07 WRX or STI or something. but throughout the week, i haven't been able to convince myself NOT to get another S, because it is a beautiful car, fun to drive, easy to work on, decent MPG, reliable and SAFE, etc
maybe i will test drive a WRX...but idk, i really think i'm still leaning towards another S.
