Those pics are old, my car now has an 06 console with the defroster button in the center.
Do you have a pic? The EDM placement of my defroster button makes my elbow switch it on/off constantly :S

Actually it is functional. Helps cool off the vortech. that thing generates some serious heat, and the flow of fresh air helps
