Will there be any difference in the way an 18x10 +40 with a 255 35 fits compared to a 17x10 +40 with a 255 40? Technically the wheels should sit in the exact same position, but I'm wondering with the extra wheel diameter and the way the tire stretches if it will fit different at all?

If there were a difference, I would guess it has to do with your springrate. If it's stiff enough, then it'll probably be no noticeable difference, but if the suspension traveled further/easier then I could see it being tougher...

That's exactly what I was looking for, thanks for the great information. So essentially, the difference will be negligible. The last thing I am wondering, with a 255 35 18, the sidewall will be 12.75mm shorter than on a 255 40 17, so this should make it stretch a little more, giving me more sidewall to fender clearance in the 18", no?

the difference all around on those two is extremely minimal. one of those.. if you cant pull off one. you cant pull off the other.
side note i have a yoko sdrive 245/35/18 on a 10 and its nothing real crazy
