I was at my local drag strip this weekend and saw new WRX do 13.9 stock. Going by this number, WRX should be really good match with S2000. So watch out for the new WRX in the streets

Maybe that was Sev's brother launching the WRX. Damn! That's pretty impressive...

0-60mph and 1/4mile of WRX is an eazy match for S2000. Very few cars can 'launch' and cover the ground from standstill like the WRX. The thing is that even though WRX does rougly the same 1/4 mile time as the S2000, it is good 7 - 10mph slower when crossing the line. Which means thaat the WRX leaps of the line and leads the S2000 while the S2000 does it's best to wheel the WRX in. This will probably happen just about when you cross the 1/4 mile but by then you'll be comfortably pulling away (or passing) the WRX.

A lot of WRX's petrformance is in it's launch and it's bottom-end grunt (it has 50% more power than the S2000 at 4000 revs).

In other words, if you meet one in the streets then watch out 'cos it has a good chance of 'smoking' you.

ps. I'm talking about the previous shape WRX, the new one is slower.

Hi Bernie,
My experiences come from a comparision that I did with a friend of mine who has a WRX ('97 model). I do have another friend who has an STI and from what I gather it does not only had a very beefy bottom end but also very serious top end to back it up. I have not been in the car yet or have not lined him up with my S2000 ... but I will as soon as I get around to it.

Though, in short - STIs are a step above (if nothing else than definatelly in the straight line).

A friend of mine is thinking of getting one. So we went for a test drive...

The car feels pretty fast. (Nice turbo rush).

As i had predicted the car will be faster then the 14.4-14.5s some mags did.

I had an Eagle talon TSI AWD a while ago and i ran a 14.44 with it. It had 32 less horses and about 10 pounds less of torque at peak and weighed about the same.

So yes a WRX should be able to run 14.0-14.2 all day even dipping into the 13s.

However as DavidM explained, the key is in the AWD take-off, it will make so much room on other cars at the start but will loose ground at about the 1/4 mile point big time.

That said, with a powerfull AWD car, you can be the king of stoplights racers.

I've got one local test of WRX that managed to get 13s out of the WRX - 13.9 to be exact. Damn impresive. Though, the trap-speed was still pretty low (in particular for the time) - it was 155kph (97mph). Though, the more 'common' trap-speed is around 150kph (94mph).

btw, still talking about the previous model. The current model has been clocked here with the best of 14.57 for the 400m and 6.14 for 0-100kph (0-62.5mph). The 0-100km/h is pretty damn quick still. Though, they usually clock them at about 6.7 these days.

David, I believe the US WRX has around 15 more HP than the Aussie WRX (227hp vs 212) so that probably brings it back close to the power - weight ratio of the older model. Therefore getting a 13.9 with the new US model is pretty consistent with 13.9 for the old, lighter Aussie model.

If the run was at carlsbad (near San Diego), then don't expect to see too many people duplicating that run stock. Carlsbad is an AWD owner's dream, particularly if it has just rained. Why? Because the track surface sucks and after it rains, water and oil will actually seep to the surface. This hurts traction, but it helps AWD drivers get some critical wheelspin they need for a fast launch. I've talked to some Audi owners who have trouble getting wheelspin and good luanches on the street that were able to get perfect launches and really quick times at Carlsbad.

Last time I was there a day after it rained I couldn't even do better than a 2.2 60 ft with slicks (normally do 1.9s not in my S2K). I watched a C5 Corvette turn a 2.6 60 ft time and run a 13.9@106 mph! But the AWD guys were just loving it and turning in their fastest runs ever.
