The reason it's so popular and loved by everybody is really quite simple I believe. Anger and frustration is normal. When someone ticks us off, almost everybody wants to just beat the living hell out of that person, but that's obviously not acceptable. For the same reason that RPGs [both table top and video game] are so popular. We get to live out our fantasies vicariously through a video game. In GTA, we can be the "bad guy" that does whatever the hell he/she wants to do without any real consequence. It's a dream we've all had at some point.
It's far from the perfect game, and it doesn't even come close to deserving the praise it has gotten in terms of technical merit, artisry or story telling. But in terms of free-roaming sandbox games, it does stand out.

way overrated.
its good maybe a 8/10 for its highest score. there IS a lot of stuff to do. but it's very repetitive; i've done the same chase mission a dozen times.
it's a bigger more detailed world but i still can't do some things. i can't go into all of the buildings, i can't order pizza from calling the numbers on the signs off of the street. i dunno, maybe i'm just spoiled.
i haven't been blown away from a video game for a long time. when i first started it up i was, but after awhile the fore mentioned repetitiveness shows its head.
yes, i have done side missions and other stuff, but to me, it just feels like its missing something.

I remember the first GTA game I played was GTA Vice City in 2003. I was totally blown away by it and will always have a special appreciation for that game. The Miami-esque city, Ray Liotta as Tommy Vercetti, the 80s pastel era, the music, I could go on and on about how great that game was. For it's time, it was also a very interactive game. I hope they make another Vice City installment for the PS3. That would be awesome!!

I started playing the franchise back when it was strictly a 2D overhead view and Vice City is my favorite of the series. I haven't played the new one yet though....I still have high hopes for it.
