Every once in awhile a "What would you do if you won a $200 million jackpot" thread pops up here or in car talk and people just name a list of 40 cars they want and 10 places they want to have mansions in. But what would you do with a more reasonable sum of money? Say you got $2 million through a small lottery jackpot or a trust fund or something of the sort. Assume you were 30 years old, married, no kids, with an annual household income of $150,000.

What would you do?

 

Pay off my condo. Buy a house, diversify the rest. . . probably put some chunk into less risky shizzle like gold, and put some into bonds with tax-free dividends.

Oh yeah, and buy some Bordeaux and some other wines on future.

 

I'd pay off my mortgage, buy a small villa in Normandy, invest in wine futures and spend 3 weeks every Summer on the Riveria watching ladies walk by..

 

Pay off my house, invest in property in an up and coming area, and dump most of the rest into long term dividend paying stocks.

Lawrence: I'll tell you what I'd do, man, two chicks at the same time, man.

Lawrence: Damn straight. I always wanted to do that, man. And I think if I had a million dollars I could hook that up, cause chicks dig a dude with money.
Peter Gibbons: Well, not all chicks.
Lawrence: Well the kind of chicks that'd double up on a dude like me do.
Peter Gibbons: Good point.
Lawrence: Well what about you now? what would you do?
Peter Gibbons: Besides two chicks at the same time?
Lawrence: Well yeah.
Peter Gibbons: Nothing.
Lawrence: Nothing, huh?
Peter Gibbons: I'd relax, I would sit on my ass all day, I would do nothing.
Lawrence: Well you don't need a million dollars to do nothing, man. Just take a look at my cousin, he's broke, don't do shit.

I would continue life as it is, maybe buy a couple nice things, but invest 95% of it.

 

ill buy me a house, pay my parents house off, and buy me another house near the beach somewhere... and save about 1mil or whatever and give the rest to a good charity or something...

 

depends on if paying off my house is going to benefit me. If i need the tax write off, and guessing with 2 million, i might need it, i will still keep paying the mortgage.... it will just seem like nothing to me.

I would invest all of it, and use the interest that i generate to buy stuff.

For me, that would be the same thing for 2 million as well as 200 million. except i guess i will end up buying more with the interest i generate.
