I'm glad Comcast doesn't carry Speed as a standard channel. I refuse to pay the extra 30 or 40 dollars a month to upgrade just for one channel
comcast blows

get directv it's in their standard package along w/ 134 other channels and locals, 41.99 per mo on one tv i think

Hey listen to me im the dtv salesman!

But back on track, I understand that NASCAR brings the big bucks even if i hate it and the whole redneck get drunk til you beat a loved one culture around it. That's why speed needs to split and have a NASCAR channel and a SPEED channel, weed get more LeMans and JGTC, deutsche touring cars, maybe a bit of expanded prime-time F1 coverage for those who don't like to get up early.

The problem is that your SPEED channel would lose money. You can't get sponsors if nobody is watching, and for all the cool programming that Speed originally carried, the ratings were horrible. LeMans, JGTC, WRC, DTM, etc - all good racing, all get lousy ratings. F1 gets mediocre ratings and can only survive on Speed because it's usually at weird hours. All those primetime redneck shows about NASCAR get much better ratings than F1 re-airs do.

NASCAR is big for many reasons... the names and faces are familiar, the cars are familiar, the racing is generally good (read: watchable) for the entire race, and most importantly the coverage is really good. Compare that to say, F1 - about half the guys might be familiar, but you can't easily distinguish between teammates, the racing is often mediocre or downright boring (Monaco, etc) with few real passes, and the coverage sucks donkey balls. How many laps do you need to follow the leader around when 2nd place is 25 seconds behind him?

[QUOTE=FearlessFife,Sep 28 2005, 02:45 PM] NASCAR does make the money.

Ahem, you mean OVALS! It's very difficult driving around those things for 4 hours straight y'know. So please, give them their props. Driving around in circles is WAY easier than driving around in an oval.
And it's not really 4 turns, it's really 2 turns. WhAt they call turns 1-2 and 3-4 are really 1 and 2. The turns are really just one long sweeper to the left, then down the straight and into the next long sweeper to the left.

Depends on the track. And if you ever watch a race, you'll know that 1-2 and 3-4 are often very different. Throw in goofy tracks like Pocono and there's a lot of unique challenges to 'go fast turn left'.

Actually if you watch NASCAR some of the racing is really good. Not that it takes as much skill as other forms, but it is more fan friendly (lots of passing, big wrecks, close finishes, good ol' boy racers, etc), unfortuanatly SPEED channel has seen the popularity of NASCAR and made every backward ass show about it. The funny thing is that none of the live NASCAR races are broadcasted live on SPEED, FOX and NBC (i think) have the rights to live NASAR racing. They need some other series of racing and also to bring back the show where they showed you celebrities and car collectors garages (not like Cribs, but celebrities that know a thing or two about cars), it was on a few years ago and it got cancelled....

TNT also has race rights. Fox has 15, NBC has 14, and TNT has 7 (something to that effect at least). NBC and TNT races are actually produced by the same group and their contracts are tied.

I could be wrong, but I believe that NASCAR owns the Speed Channel. OR the France family that owns NASCAR owns the Speed Channel - not sure which one it is.

Speed is owned by Fox, along with Fox Sports, FX, Fuel, and the National Geographic channel.

For what it's worth, Fox bought Speedvision largely in order to have more airtime to generate revenue from their very expensive acquisition of NASCAR race rights.
