Josh, I so many words I agree with you. But I wasn't there to access the situation only comment on what was actually offered in the original comments. No argument here! My only concern was the misconception of his attitude towards the situation. Treating others as you would have them treat you is paramount. We imagine a lot of things when confronted with bias ideologies. I can't control what another individual thinks or does, they have to do that. I can't make excuses for things that have been done in the past but neither do I have to dwell in them either. Even when confronted with aggression I will access the situation and use only the necessary force to provide order. I've trained other officers in the use of deadly force and it's principles. Confrontation training is a requirement. We don't control situations we provide order to situations the become unorderly. If an individual sees that they are wrong and changes the action by themselves then the only confrontation that was required was "presence". In this situation, the action that was taken was verbal and provided a counter point of relivant fact which he later admitted to, ie, numerous citations and one very recent one, pent up anger or even unwarranted hatred was dictating his response. This is where problems of cognitive thought appear. If you can't reason within yourself then you can't control your anger or actions.

Josh I'm not trying to degrade anything that you have said, just enhance it. Can we be very forceful when needed, you bet but only when the circumstances require it. Look, if a cop can't distinguish and make a concerted effort to think before he acts then he has no business being a cop. I'll be the first one to tell them this also. Maturity, self-reliance, being able to cope, are qualities that officers need to have. But they also have to learn to be humble in the course of their duties. It's no different than normal human development. If a cops an asshole then he's probably an asshole without being a cop. Some things only life experience can teach. No excuses offered because we have the capability to change the action. But remember one thing, I have to react to the situation that's presented. I have to draw on my experience and intuitive ability. I'm not a mind reader. Reality and rational thought is what I must act on.

Cheers

Jeff

ok, one more time for good LUCK.

did you all against me not see that my citations are negligible things. i have no points on my record and am not in any danger of losing my license. speeding, running red light, hitting people, are these not... ok, nevermind. so frustrating explaining to people who do not consider the possibilities.

the point of this post is not to demean cops because they do a great job of that themselves already without my 2 cents. let me count the ways... the point here is not to establish that some cops are messed up because that is already a given. the question is what can we do to protect ourselves.

some of you make me so sad. i asked a question and so many people who double me in age can't even answer the question but have to walk around it until we all fall down. is this like a reading comprehension issue or something...

Merry Christmas to all, but even on Christmas, we are vunerable to those who we pay to protect us if they simply FEEL like it. maybe they are pissed to be working on Christmas. YOU think about it.

bob - sounds like that cop was being a real d!ck and that's not the way things should be. If all cops went by were profiles and statistics we'd be in big trouble. Hopefully more will use good judgement and will think for themselves.

Steve, this is surprising because you're usually one of the most calm and cool headed ones posting... I think you took in this whole thread at once, which is a lot to try and digest

I'm sorry if anyone took my posts the wrong way. I know I mistakenly pegged my self-righteous meter while posting last nite, so I'll just observe for now and see how things wind down.

One thing that keeps coming up over and over is the fact that this is all personal opinion. and where does your personal opinion come from? personal experience. so everyone must remember that we have all had different experiences in our lives that have formed our idealogies into what they are. so in our own right, we are all right.
that said, i am 23 years old and have lived in los angeles for 21 years and have had many, many run ins with the police. thankfully, i have gotten away with some crazy stuff where i was CLEARLY in the wrong and was let go with warnings. but in the same token, i was pulled over ironically in texas, and seriously harrassed for absolutely nothing at all.
my point of all this is that i believe that most cops are doing their best and mostly dont let their personal situations come into contact with their work, but it does happen. regardless of which, if you are not doing anything wrong, you should not be afraid. i see it like this, if you are afraid, they sense that and feel like they need to enforce that. i dont know, what do i know, i have only been studying psychology 5 years too.

It would be nice wouldn't it! We're just people who post on a web site Mav. There's just so much crap I can listen to sometimes. I bend over backwards not to get into this stuff sometimes but it gets difficult !
