Speed Trap

No kidding. If it wasn't about revenue, why do they tend to have more people on traffic enforcement than any other group? Why does a "slow" ticket cost so much and a "fast" ticket cost so little more? There's nothing linear about the ticket penalties, that's for sure.

Why do they think we NEED them to protect us from ourselves in a car? I'm pretty sure that if they did away with the speed limits everything would be fine. Granted you have the occasional idiot who feels the need to go 160mph but most of society has some kind of common sense and is typically scared of death.

exactly... when i have 0 fear of getting pulled over i'd still not go over about 85.
even right now, with enforcement, most people go whatever speed they feel comfortable with on the freeway and ignore the limits. 1 cop on a 200mi stretch of road doesn't deter anyone. it just gets them some ticket revenue.

I saw several articles recently about how in a bad economy you could expect more traffic enforcement officers to be out and about to help supplement the city budget. I didn't think too much about that, but in my recent trip from DFW to Orlando I was amazed at how many hidden speed traps I passed.
Floriday had cars just about every 5 miles along the interstate.
There were some spots that within 2 miles there would be the FHP, a Sherrif's dept and a local cop.
My Valentine 1 paid for it'self several times over.
Ohh, and I've got cop friends, while they may not have an actual number for a quota, but they are reprimanded if they don't write enough tickets.

They forgot the 5th - pacing you, usually from behind, which is a great way to get people.
Also, studies show that people don't drive much faster than 75 when there is no speed limit, but 85% of people exceed a 55 mph limit regularly. This thinking goes all the way back to the 50s when the highway system was designed for high speed use.
Government gets revenue mainly from sales tax, property tax, income tax, and law enforcement.
We're in a recession, so there goes sales tax. Property values are plummeting, so there goes property tax. People are getting laid off and businesses are closing, so there goes income tax.
As a result, law enforcement gets pressured to generate more revenue for the government - its the only stream still healthy for many governments.
Its so bad that police freely admit they are targeting more minor infractions to generate revenue.

A guy in the So Cal forum recently got nailed by a lazer gun at 562 feet away. That's almost two football fields. The cop showed him the digital speed and distance readouts on the gun.
