A driver's license, car registration and title would alleviate all fears that the person showing the car is the rightful owner.

Also, I would never pay for the car without receiving the title. If you get the story that they need to pay off their loan and will send you the title, ensure you have the cashiers check made out to whoever has the lien on the car or to both the owner and the bank (it's listed on the registration). I learned this the hard way.

Stolen registration and title docs, together with a fake license, and I am still screwed.

I know there is no easy way round this. I have bought a number of cars, mostly in the UK, and have never bought one privately from someone who wants to meet somewhere other than their home. I am not saying you are wrong, just saying that I, personally, would not buy from you if you wanted to meet me at a grocery store.

Good point, but get ready to be standing around said gas station all day because of no-shows, and people who ring half an hour after the set time and say they're going to be late.

Selling a car is a PITA!
