A friend rear ended another car ... it happened in morning traffic and the car he hit... drove off! for reasons unknown, the driver that was hit drove off and did not stop.
would you call the insurance co. and tell the (truth)story... or call and explain that someone must have hit the car in a parking lot... slight damage to front bumper.

PARKING LOT!!!!

I know the law in Canada is if you rear end someone it's your fault, no matter what the circumstances.

Don't look for trouble

Rather dishonest group of guys we have here, aren't we? Your karma will catch up with you in the end folks!

Fairly clearly Red, your "friend" (now there's a euphenism if ever I heard one) will feel a lot better in telling the truth and accepting their responsibility but in any case let's look at the facts.

I am assuming whoever was hit is either not concerned about the damage or for whatever reason does not intend to make a claim against you, and that you do not have their registration (licence plate) details.

If you claim on your insurance you will 1). have to pay the excess, 2). pay an increased premium for years to come unless you can identify the offending vehicle who hit you.

If it is, as you say, only slight damage to the front bumper, then according to my calculations you will be in front in very short order by just paying for the damange yourself and avoid notifying the insurance company at all.

I agree with everyone else... Parking Lot! No need to pay an additional amount of money to your insurance company for the next couple of years, if you really don't have to. Just my two cents.

If I didn't know they were already captured, I'd say you must have rear-ended one of the Texas seven, or at least a similar felon who was on the lam.
